School Involvement

National Honor Society

As President of National Honor Society in the 2017-2018 school year, Nicole hopes to expand BHHS’s current tutoring program to elementary and middle schools around the district. In the past Nicole has served as an NHS Group Leader and was responsible for planning a year long community service effort. As Group Leader she co-coordinated a district wide food drive for the Gleaners Food Bank during the holidays. She also planned quarterly visits to the Gleaners Food Bank for her group to help package food for the hungry.

Student Leadership

Nicole is currently serving on the Executive Board as the Fundraising Director for the BHHS Student Leadership. In the past, she served as Vice President (sophomore year) and Treasurer (freshman year). Student Leadership is by far one of Nicole’s favorite groups she is a part of, as it provides her with the opportunity to plan fun and worthwhile school wide events as well as have a voice in the student body at BHHS.

Spanish Club

Nicole has been an avid member of Spanish Club since her freshman year. As Co-President during the 2016-2017 school year, Nicole spearheaded sponsorship of a local Hispanic family through Hispanic Outreach, by raising enough money to fund a family of four’s wish list for Christmas. She also participated in the Hispanic Outreach tutoring program for Hispanic students in Pontiac, MI.

BuildOn

Nicole first became involved in BuildOn during her freshman year of High School. She served as Fundraising Coordinator during her sophomore year, helping to plan and execute the annual ‘Bowl On for BuildOn’ bowling event. During her junior year she served as Vice President and will be President during her senior year. To date, BHHS BuildOn club has raised approximately $7,000 for the international BuildOn organization. Nicole is very passionate and committed to the BuildOn cause, as she believes that one of the greatest obstacles people in poverty face is not having access to a basic education or literacy skills.

Computer Science

Nicole is passionate about coding and hopes to pursue computer science as a career in the future. She has taken various coding classes, both in and out of school, such as Exploring Computer Science, Zed Shaw’s Learning Python the Hard Way, as well as some Code Academy classes. This year she is taking AP Computer Science Principles. Nicole has created various Python mini projects, and developed this website!

Varsity Tennis

Nicole has been on the BHHS Varsity Tennis Team since her freshman year. She played 1 doubles during her freshman and sophomore seasons and made the All State team both years. During her junior year season she played 3 doubles and was an individual semi finalist at States, with the team placing 3rd overall. During sophomore and junior year she was a regional champion. Nicole looks forward to being a team Captain during her senior year and has high hopes for next season!

Varsity Field Hockey

The Oakland Field Hockey Team first began 4 years ago and Nicole was one of the original members, joining in 8th grade. She made the varsity team her freshman year (serving as Captain during her sophomore and junior years) and has enjoyed watching the team grow and encouraging friends to join the team as well.

Work

At Mathnasium, Nicole tutors students ages 6-16 in a wide range of math topics. Through this job she has learned that every student learns differently, and, thus, has adapted her teaching style to meet the needs of the individual student. She has also learned to take complex math topics and explain them in a way that makes them understandable to all.

As a 15 year old looking for a job, Nicole found that most businesses wouldn’t hire someone under the age of 16. She decided to create her own freelance tutoring business and continues to tutor students independently, along with her work at Mathnasium.

As a writer for Bloomfield Hills Living Magazine, Nicole writes monthly articles about events in her community as well as spotlights student athletes. She enjoys writing and is always looking for that next story.

Projects

Nicole has been volunteering at the Lions Club since sophomore year. She first became involved by developing a multi-year effort to collect gently used eyeglasses and donate them to Lions Club. Over the years, she has collected more than 600 pairs of glasses that have been distributed to low-income families in need, both domestically and internationally. Nicole also volunteers every month at Bingo for the Blind, a Lions Club sponsored event. At the event, she helps the visually impaired mark their bingo cards, serves them food, and helps with any task that requires sight. Nicole has thoroughly enjoyed all the friendships she has formed through this event.

The idea for Culture Day first began in freshman year as an independent project for Student Leadership Class. Nicole and a few peers co-created, organized and executed the annual event at local elementary schools every year of high school. The purpose of this event is to teach elementary students about empathy and diversity by immersing them in various cultures from around the world. At the event, high school volunteers teach kids about different countries and their cultures using presentations, interactive activities and cultural facts.
